Lulu.com 2019 $5k for 5k Contest Winner Announced

On April 1st of this year, pioneers in self-publishing, Lulu.com, announced a writing contest that would award the winner $5k in cash. Due to an oversight, the Lulu team forgot to include the previously agreed upon “prank” portion of the announcement.

“I specifically remember saying it would be a hilarious April Fools’ prank,” said Matt Briel, Lulu’s VP of Marketing. “Why would we give away $5,000? That’s like 50 years of Netflix we could have gotten for the office!”

Fortunately, we were able to reach another member of Lulu’s marketing team for further comment: “I vaguely remember Matt saying we should launch the contest on April 1st as a joke, but that was the week we got a new ping pong table for the office so honestly, it’s all a blur,” said Lali Szumowski-Weiss-Khani, Lulu’s Social Media Manager. “We’re all pretty bummed that Matt probably won’t have a job anymore after this, but I bet the winner of the contest is super excited!”

Indeed, Templeton Moss, whose story ‘The Danny Jacobs Program’ took first prize in the contest, is very excited.

“Ohmygodthankyousomuchiamsoexcited!!!” exclaimed Moss.

In addition to the $5,000 cash prize, Moss’s story will be included in the Crossing Borders Anthology and he will receive a ticket to BookCon 2020 in NYC.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” commented Briel.

Lulu’s first annual (and possibly last) $5k for 5k writing contest accepted any original works of fiction or nonfiction between 2,000 – 5,000 words that explored the contest theme of “Crossing Borders.” Once the shortlist was chosen, Lulu called on local bookstores including Quail Ridge Books, The Regulator Bookshop and Read With Me, to help pick the winner.

In unrelated news, Lulu.com is possibly seeking a new VP of Marketing. Inquiries can be sent to pr@lulu.com
